This lithograph was used as a frontispiece for a book recounting fifty years of lithographic printing at the Mourlot studio. It was published by Pierre Bordas et Fils and this particular image reproduces an Original drawing by Joan Miro, created and given to Fernand Mourlot in 1975 for his 80th birthday. It was faithfully executed by Mourlot Master Printer, Henri Deschamps, under the supervision and approval of Miro , just before his death in December of 1983.
Miro often worked with a somewhat limited palette, yet the colors he used were bold and expressive. His chromatic explorations, which emphasized the potential of fields of unblended color to respond to one another, provided inspiration for a generation of color field painters. Miro's radical, inventive style was a critical contributor in the early 20th century avant-garde journey toward increasing and then complete abstraction. Ed. 2,500
