Collection: Jean-Marie Fonteneau

(1931-1998) French

Jean-Marie Fonteneau was a painter, designer, illustrator and a writer / novelist. He wrote his first book, "Les Champignons" in 1970. His passion for entomology (study of insects), took him every year to far away places like Lapland, the Canary Islands and Equatorial Africa.

This true "Renaissance Man" also designed some of the most wonderful posters for the theatre, cabarets and restaurants, including the original poster for the 1973 play "La Cage aux Folles". Other famous posters were created for Le Paradis Latin, Michou and L'Alcazar.

He ended his career as the Curator of La Citadelle de Belle-Île-en-Mer and as a noted Acadian researcher. He passed away of heart attack in his hotel room in Halifax, Canada.
